Faith

What is Faith?

Introduction

The scriptures listed below will reveal God's methodology for establishing faith and the transformation of hope in an individual.  This essay will show that prior to being "Born Again" and individual can only have hope due to their sinful, "disobedient nature" that makes an individual rebellious against God.  When we speak of the sin nature, we refer to the fact that we have a natural inclination to sin; given the choice to do God’s will or our own, we will naturally choose to do our own will and disregard the will of our lord, Christ Jesus.  This essay will highlight the scriptures that shows the original state of an individual prior to a spiritual rebirth and the transformation and regeneration an individual undertakes for the transformation of hope and the creation of faith.

Question

The main apparent question is HOW does Faith come into an individuals life?
The order of the relevant areas indicate the biblical progression an individual takes to acquire faith.
To answer this question, our study will include these (8) eight relevant areas in progressional order.
1.  God's calling for all.
2.  What Hope are we physically born with?
3.  The biblical state of our human heart prior to a  "spiritual rebirth."
4.  The heart which responds to Christ Jesus as lord and savior, "spiritual rebirth?"
5.  Transformation, "born again" and "spiritual rebirth."
6.  Regeneration of the human spirit by the Holy Spirit.
7.  What is the biblical definition of faith?
8.  Establishment and fulfillment of faith in the believer + conclusion

God's calling for all.

1. The calling of God.

1Timothy 2:4
"Who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth."
2Peter 3:9
"The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance."

Revelation 3:20
Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.

Conclusion
The scriptures listed above indicate that God wish's that all individuals of His creation yearn to be a part of the "family of God, Ephesians 2:19". God is knocking on the door of every individual's heart for entry and communion

What hope are we physically born with?

2.  Hope

Hope is an optimistic attitude that God created in every human, "individual's" mind that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes related to events and circumstances in one's life.  As a verb, its definitions include: "expect with confidence" and "a desire with anticipation."   Being that it is an optimistic attitude and/or expectation of one's personal desires, there is no confidence that any hope an individual may perceive will ever manifest itself.  Only a individual's self will or determination will alter the outcome prior to having a spiritual rebirth.

The human heart prior to a "spiritual rebirth."

3. Our Human Heart

Jeremiah 17:9
“The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; Who can understand it?"

Proverbs 19:3
The foolishness of man subverts his way, And his heart rages against the LORD.

Mark 7: 21-23
For from the inside, from your heart, come the evil ideas which lead you to do immoral things, to rob, kill, commit adultery, be greedy, and do all sorts of evil things; deceit, indecency, jealousy, slander, pride, and folly— all these evil things come from inside you and make you unclean."

Romans 3: 10-18
as it is written,
“There is none righteous, not even one;
There is none who understands,
There is none who seeks for God;
All have turned aside, together they have become useless;
There is none who does good,
There is not even one.”
“Their throat is an open grave,
With their tongues they keep deceiving,”
“The poison of asps is under their lips”;
“Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”;
“Their feet are swift to shed blood,
Destruction and misery are in their paths,
And the path of peace they have not known.”
“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

1 John 1:8
"If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us."

Conclusion
It is clear that the scriptures teach that the human heart is depraved and that our hopes are an extension of our depravity.

The heart which responds to Christ Jesus.

4. The Heart that heeds the calling.

Matthew 5:2-11 Sermon on the mountain
The Beatitudes
And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you..

Luke 6:21-23  Sermon on the plain
The Beatitudes
And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said:
“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
“Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.

Revelation 3:20
Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.

Conclusion
From the beginning of an individual's life,  God is Knocking on the door of one's heart.  Jesus made it very clear in the Sermon on the Mountain and the Sermon on the Plain that only the poor, "humble" in spirit will heed the calling, "knocking" and inherit the kingdom of heaven.  In other words,  we must not be self-satisfied, but have a realization that true life is more then self-existence and worldly processions, but an inward plea or calling for God's salvation from both oneself and the worldThis plea or calling for acceptance of God's free gift of salvation only comes from a heart that is poor, "humbled" in spirit.

What takes place when we humble our spirit to God?

5.  Transformation, "born again"

John 3: 1-8  -Jesus and Nicodemus
"There was a Jewish leader named Nicodemus, who belonged to the party of the Pharisees. One night he went to Jesus and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher sent by God. No one could perform the miracles you are doing unless God were with him."
Jesus answered, "I am telling you the truth: no one can see the Kingdom of God without being born again."
"How can a grown man be born again?" Nicodemus asked. "He certainly cannot enter his mother's womb and be born a second time!"
"I am telling you the truth," replied Jesus, "that no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. A person is born physically of human parents, but is born spiritually of the Spirit. Do not be surprised because I tell you that you must all be born again. The wind blows wherever it wishes; you hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. It is like that with everyone who is born of the Spirit."

Titus 3:4-8
"
But when the kindness and love of God our Savior was revealed, he saved us. It was not because of any good deeds that we ourselves had done, but because of his own mercy that he saved us, through the Holy Spirit, who gives us new birth and new life by washing us. God poured out the Holy Spirit abundantly on us through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that by his grace we might be put right with God and come into possession of the eternal life we hope for."

Conclusion

To be born again is to undergo a "spiritual rebirth", or a regeneration of our human spirit from the Holy Spirit. This is contrasted with the physical birth everyone experiences.  The spiritual rebirth commence man's spirit and the Holy Spirit to merge.

Regeneration of the human spirit by the Holy Spirit.

6.  Our New Life.

Ezekiel 36: 26-27
"Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances."

Romans 6:4
"Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life."

2 Corinthians 5:17

"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come."

Ephesians 4:24

"and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth."

Conclusion

Once an individual is "born again" they become a new creation, "new life" due to the inner cleansing and renewal of the human nature by the Holy Spirit.  This regeneration process of the Holy Spirit transforms an individuals soul from dead to life and is made holy by the regeneration process.  This regeneration also infuses the attributes of God, wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness and truth into the New Creation in Christ Jesus.

What is the biblical definition of faith?

7. What is faith

Hebrews 11:1
"To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of the things we cannot see."

Conclusion
a.  "to be sure"  Faith insures us that what we hope for will manifest itself.
b.  "to be certain"  Faith also insures us that even being confronted with "all obstacles," we can rest in the truths of the bible and have the assurance and conviction that Faith will manifest itself.

Faith in the believer

8.  Establishment and fulfillment of faith in the believer + conclusion

John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life."
a.  John 3:16 is the fulfillment of 1-7 relevant areas in this essay.

Ephesians 2:8
"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;"
a. Grace means to get something that you do not deserve; unmerited favor.
b. Faith is the interaction of the Holy Spirit in an individual that has accepted Christ Jesus as lord of their life.
c.  Not simply means "not."  An individual can not save themselves.  The only requirement is that the individual not refuse and accept the gift of God.
d.  Gift means that one does not pay or work for the gift that God offers.

Galatians 5:1 Walk by the Spirit
"It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery."
a. Freedom is one of the redemptive results of an individual's acceptance or the gift or salvation.

Matthew 17: 19-21
"Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not drive it out?” And He *said to them, “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. [But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”]
a.  Christ Jesus is clear that "faith that moves mountains only is possible with prayer and fasting."

Matthew 9: 27-30
"
As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” When He entered the house, the blind men came up to Him, and Jesus *said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They *said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” Then He touched their eyes, saying, “It shall be done to you according to your faith.”

Conclusion

The answer to "What is Faith?"

a.  An individuals hope prior to becoming a new creation in Christ Jesus is depraved with only selfish, worldly desires.
b.  An individuals new hope after becoming a new creation in Christ Jesus is full of wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness and truth according to ones sanctification.
cAn individuals faith is the process of the Holy Spirit working through and with the new creation in Christ Jesus.  Only the empowerment of the Holy Spirit can fulfill the biblical definition of faith as stated in Hebrews 11:1.  As an individual's spirit submits, "decreases," the Holy Spirit increases.
d.  Faith will only be manifested when it exhibits and contains the attributes and will of our lord, Christ Jesus.
